The prompt this week is Oops. The first thing that comes to mind is when I was starting out and sent off for my maternal grandfathers death certificate. I wasn't expecting to gather much more information than I already had but I wanted to have it anyway. He died in 1958, just under a decade before I was born. As far as I was concerned, he came to Australia, married my grandmother and they had a child - my mother.
On receiving the death certificate, many many questions began to form. Everything was fine until the questions about the marital status. Yes he was married ... Ahh no, thats not my grandmas name! My mothers name was listed under Issue but then crossed out. The informant of the death was my grandma, but listed as 'no relation'
Oops!
This was not as straight forward as I expected. I made too many assumptions!
Long story short, I was able to find that my grandfather had a first marriage in England. They had a child who died. They came to Australia where they applied for divorce. I haven't been able to confirm a divorce /and/or a subsequent marriage to my grandma.but I will keep looking.
