HAA107 Families at war

This was my last Unit and involved a lot of reading. It introduces researching online military records with the focus being Australia and Britain during WW1.

Accessing online military service records, reading wartime diaries and understanding lives within the wider history of war - particularly those left at home.

For the assignment we had to research and write a biographical report of a person's wartime service or experience.  My great grandfather faught in WW1 but I hadn't been able to find much information regarding his war so I again borrowed an ancestor from Links in the Chain.  I need to ask her permission to share the assignment.

Helpful places to look when researching WW1

War Diaries - If you are unable to find a Diary of your own Soldier, find names he faught with and see if they have a diary.  Even if not personally mentioned, you will have a better idea of what they were going through. (Australian War Memorial website)

First World War Embarkation Rolls (Australian War Memorial website )

Australian War Memorial - The Australian War Memorial in Canberra, ACT, has a Roll of Honour name projection where names are projected onto the façade of the Hall of Memory as a tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The dates and times are towards the bottom of your soldiers page.

National Archives of Australia - search for your Soldier by name.  Digital copies of Attestation Papers are available for free. There is also a photo search option.

Virtual War Memorial Australia - Memorials with links to other data sources bringing the names to life.
