HEJ001 The Photo Essay - an Introduction

This Unit was learning to create a photo essay.  Telling a story through photos.  Putting words and images together.

Assignment 1 was to produce a one photo and caption up to 3 sentences in length. Assignment 2 was to produce a 7-10 page photo essay.  Half of the photos had to have been taken by me whilst doing this Unit.  Lucky we had a weekend camping trip planned.

The Unit covered Composition and design  - Rule of Thirds, Leading Lines, Symmetry, Pattern and repetition, Framing and Filling the frame.

Colour terminology - Hue, saturation and brightness.

Strategies for using colour effectively - Adding a pop of colour or pairing up complimentary colours on a colour wheel.

Tips for writing Captions - Captions should be written in complete sentences. A sentence should always contain a verb and a subject. 'Tense' tells us when the action took place. Don't state the obvious.  An example of this we were given - Last Thursday there was a beautiful sunset or The sunset last Thursday made me hold my breath for a moment or Sunset makes the water blush. The caption doesn't have to be informative, instead it can just be to enhance the meaning of the image.
