John Scholey

John and Ann (Bradley) Scholey lived a few doors down from his older brother Thomas.  John and Ann married on 27 December 1813 in Sotby and had 8 children - all baptised in Sotby :

Mary baptised 10 April 1814
Edward baptised 9 August 1818
John baptised 13 September 1820
Thomas baptised 9 June 1822
Ann baptised 13 June 1824
Martha baptised 20 December 1825
Elizabeth baptised 12 April 1829
Charles baptised 17 July 1831

At the time of the 1841 Census all the kids were at home apart from John who was working as a butchers apprentice in the St Benedict parish, Lincolnshire and Ann who was with the Beecham family in the Horncastle Alottment parish, Lincolnshire.  Susan Needham was born in 1821 in Fulletby, Lincolnshire and Thomas Tindal was born in 1826 in Holton Beckering, Lincolnshire.

By 1851, both servants, Susan and Thomas, had married and moved away.  Living at home with John and Ann were Mary, Edward, Elizabeth and Charles. John married Mary Ann Sharp in 1845 and is now a farmer of 227 acres. Thomas had married Thirza Drewery in 1848 and moved to Great Sturton and I have not been able to find Martha.  Now living with the family are Martha Bradley (sister of Ann) and their nephew Thomas Bradley (son of John - who is my 4th great grandfather, a brother of Ann and Martha)  Two servants by the names of Ann Chambers and William Crow were also there.

Between the Census years daughter Ann married William Akrill in 1854, Mary married John Bett in 1856, moving to Grimoldby to live, Charles married Fanny Wattam in 1857, Elizabeth married Thomas Wattam in 1859 and son Edward married Harriett Cooper in 1860.  The siblings also appear as witnesses on each others Parish Register entries which is lovely to see. John and Ann Scholey both died in the 1850s - John was buried in Sotby on 15 July and Ann on 6 July 1858.  Sister/Sister in law Martha Bradley died in December 1859 and was buried on 18 December also in Sotby.

In the 1861 Census it appears that Edward took over the family farm after Johns passing.  He is listed as a farmer of 300 acres along with his wife Harriett.  Nephew Thomas Bradley is still in Sotby but is living with his widowed mother. Still can't locate Martha, although no record of her death or Ann in 1861.  Of the others, all except Elizabeth are still living in Lincolnshire.  Elizabeth and her husband Thomas have moved to Essex.

The last of the siblings to marry was Martha who married Richard Clarke in 1864.  However I am still unable to find her in 1851 or 1861.  She is around somewhere as I found her as a witness for the marriages of *Sarah in 1854 and Mary in 1856.

* I think I have found another child of John and Ann.  Sarah Scholey was baptised 30 July 1816 but in Hatton, Lincolnshire not Sotby.  She would have arrived between Mary and Edward.  She married Wingate Maltby in 1854 and both Edward and Martha were witnesses.  Also in the 1861 Census she was staying with Thomas and Thirza in Sturton.
