As mentioned in Week 1: Id like to meet, my great grandfather was a member of the Richmond Swimming Club in Middlesex, England in the early 1900s. I love this as I was a member of the Glenbrook Swimming Club, NSW, Australia.
I have found many newspaper articles from 1905 through to 1909 of his weekly swim meets and the length and times of racing. The only mention I find of him earlier than this is in 1900. The Blackheath Harriers held a Plunging handicap event at Ladywell Baths, Lewisham, London. According to Wikipedia its a diving event that enjoyed its greatest popularity in the 19th and early part of the 20th century, which fits right in to my great grandfathers timeline.
Frederick seems to have been a fairly consistent 100-200 metre swimmer, but also appears to have competed in a quarter mile swim once a year.
