As mentioned in Week 1: Id Like to Meet for a long time my Brick Wall was my paternal great grandfather Frederick Robinson. I ended up following the DNA and successfully going back many generations, primarily in London which was a new and exciting area in my History.
Of course, once I'd sorted Fred, a new Brick Wall formed. My second great grandmother Emily Little was born in May 1840 in Chippenham, Wiltshire, England. I had her in my tree with the usual 6 to 7 siblings, parents sorted etc etc. Then one day, for reasons I no longer remember, I decided to check the GRO Indexes. I had started occasionally looking up ancestors and adding the registration information to their profiles in Ancestry.co.uk. I popped in her birth year, name and mum's maiden name - no result. Took out mum's maiden name - One result but different maiden name. It should have been Fry but was Aland. Odd. I then search for her younger brother Charles. Same result, should have been Fry but was Aland. Lastly I searched for her older sibling Eliza - mother's maiden name was Fry. Sent for pdf certificates. Correct father, profession of father and even area. Except Emily and Charles did not have the mother I was expecting/had assumed/had obviously not checked before. Annoyingly both mothers have the Christian name Sarah. Christening information has the usual - James and Sarah Little - this could be why all the Little children in parish registers have been attributed to James and Sarah Fry. I can find no instance of Sarah (Fry) Little passing away and James subsequently marrying another Sarah. (James Little and Sarah Fry married in 1818) I can find no instance of another James Little marrying a Sarah Aland. All the hints on Ancestry and all the other people's trees on Ancestry have Sarah Fry as Emily's mum. According to the GRO registrations James and Sarah (Fry) Little had their last child (Eliza) in 1838. James and Sarah (Aland) Little have Emily in 1840 and Charles in 1843 and none after that but obviously could have older children (GRO registrations only started during 1838). I have gone through christening records, marriage records etc and haven't found anything that will help me further. I will of course look again.
I think to sort this one I need to go back and find both of the James' christenings and try and follow them to their marriages that way. Chippenham, Wiltshire can't be that big a place can it?
